USA: Proposal Would Limit Debt Collections Against Federal Workers in Virginia

Proposal Would Limit Debt Collections Against Federal Workers in Virginia

Del. Bob Marshall wants to add protections for those affected by the government shutdown.

A Virginia delegate wants to restrict debt collection activities against federal workers living in the state that might be affected by the government shutdown.

Del. Bob Marshall, R-Manassas, told WTOP in Washington, D.C., that under his proposal, “No debt collections will be processed in state courts if they are against employees directly affected by the shutdown, which is primarily federal employees.”

Marshall has also proposed a moratorium on utility cutoffs for federal workers.

Virginia has more than 170,000 federal workers, WTOP reported, and Marshall said he’s worried that the longer the shutdown lasts, the more these workers will be affected by debt collections and utility cutoffs.

The proposal will likely come before the Virginia General Assembly in January, WTOP reported.
