Hospitals’ Uncompensated Care Costs Increased to $45.9 Billion

Jump from $41.1 billion in 2011 to $45.9 billion in marks an 11.7 percent increase in the cost to hospitals for bad debt and charity care.

In 2012, the cost to U.S. hospitals for providing uncompensated care, which includes charity care and bad debt, totaled $45.9 billion, according to new data from the American Hospitals Association. This marks an 11.7 percent increase from the $41.1 billion in uncompensated care costs in 2011. Uncompensated care cost data does not include Medicare and Medicaid underpayment costs. Read the AHA report.
